Pathogenetic Correlations of Anti-Ganglioside Antibody in Guillain-Barre Sydrome

Abstract
Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is characterized by similar clinical manifestations which are caused by several factors. But the autoimmune theories seems to be important for uderstanding its pathomechanism. Recently antibodies to neutral
glycolipid,
anti-GM1 antibidies, and anti-MAG antibidies have been implicated for possible causative favtors in some GBS(Ilyas et al. 1988; Koski et al. 1989; Yu et al. 1990 ).
The author performed the study to understand the pathogenetic correlation of antiGM1 antibokies with GBS. The anti-GM1 titers were checked by the ELISA method in 30 patients with GBS, 30other neurological diseases (OND) and 30 normal subjects.
All
the
sera from GBS patients were taken during the period of acute exacerbation or before 10 to 20 days after the initiation of clinical disability. The positive IgM-type anti-GM1 antibidies were found in 10 out 30 GBS patients(33.3%), and 6 out of 30
OND
patients (20%), and none of 30 normal subjects. Clinically, the relative severe course were found in 4 out of 10 (40.0%) antibidy-positive and in 4 out of 20 (20.0%) antibidy-negative BVS ptients, which was not significant statistically.
Therefore it is concluded that there could be some correlations of oanti-GM1 antibodies with GBS, which needs further investigation.
